What is Plantar Fasciitis?

The most common locations of pain for plantar fasciitis are the central-medial arch, plantar-medial heel at the beginning of the arch, or the central-plantar heel. The pain is described as sharp, stabbing pain when weight is placed on the foot, typically after a long period of rest. The pain usually subsides a bit as you get moving but you can still feel a dull ache in your heel all day.

So what causes plantar fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is most often a result of mechanical overload. Mechanical overload can be caused by high foot arch, lack of foot support from old or worn shoes, standing or walking for a long period of time, obesity, or poor posture. Due to this, there are certain factors that can put you more at risk of plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is most common between the ages of 40 and 60, if you are obese, or if you have an occupation that keeps you on your feet.

How do you treat plantar fasciitis? Treatments may vary depending on the severity of your condition, but treatments are usually a combination of stretching and physical therapy, a splint to stretch your foot while you sleep, anti-inflammatory medicine, or a steroid injection.
